Leg 2 am: Makinen chases Gronholm!

Marcus Gronholm's cruise to victory on the Rally Argentina has been hit by trouble on the opening two stages of the second leg - and now Tommi Makinen is back in the hunt for the win

Gronholm ended day one with a minute and 40 seconds in hand over Makinen. But the Finn's Peugeot 206 WRC lost hydraulic pressure on SS10, and with it, bags of time. He was forced to drive around the problem on the next stage, giving Makinen a sniff of the lead.

The Subaru star won SS11 and is now just 16 seconds behind Gronholm. The cars are currently in service before what looks set to be a cracking battle for the rest of the day begins.

Two frontrunners have been forced to retire this morning. Freddy Loix, who was sixth overnight, was hit by a throttle problem on the opening stage of the leg and called it a day before the start of SS11.

And Harri Rovanpera, who was seventh at the end of yesterday, also never made it to the second stage. His Peugeot engine dropped on to two cylinders on SS10 and he had no choice but to retire.

Richard Burns remains third in his Peugeot, while Colin McRae has moved into the points for the first time and lies sixth in his Ford Focus.
