Kankkunen still pushing for victory
Tommi Makinen continues to dominate in New Zealand, despite having picked up a dose of flu over the past few days. On an event where he has always struggled in the past, the triple champion is looking untouchable as leg two draws to a close
Juha Kankkunen was fastest on SS17, taking over three seconds off Makinen. Although the gap is large, Kankkunen has set some strong times today and obviously still has hopes of victory.
Behind Kankkunen lies his protégé and the undoubted star of the rally, Toni Gardemeister, who is now the only SEAT WRC driver left in the rally after Harri Rovanpera dropped out. He stopped in the middle of SS17 with no oil pressure.
Carlos Sainz has now taken 4th, but is around two minutes behind Gardemeister so will find it hard to make further progress. He was able to slip ahead of Thomas Radstrom on the last stage when the Ford driver had problems with his brakes.
