Grapevine: Sainz goes back to his roots

Two-time world rally champion Carlos Sainz will return to his roots this month when he competes in the Shalymar rally in Spain

The Spaniard, who formally retired from the world rally championship in 2004, will drive the Skoda Fabia WRC used by Czech Jan Kopecky during the season in the two-day event.

The rally will take place on November 23-24 and will kick off from Real Madrid's football stadium before moving to the Jarama circuit for a superspecial.

Sainz began competing in the Shalymar rally in 1980, and the 45-year-old made it clear he was taking part in this year's edition just to help promote the event.

"The reason why I'm taking part in the Shalymar rally is just to help the organisers," Sainz said.

"In 2006 I drove the zero car and this time we have opted to participate. But I don't want anyone to think that I'm back to doing rallies, because it's not the case.

"I simply wanted to help the event in which I made my debut in 1980."

Sainz is now a Volkswagen driver in rally-raid events.
