Burns won't back off too much

Richard Burns has said that he must avoid being too cautious, despite only needing to drive for a top four finish to claim his first world championship on the Network Q Rally of Great Britain

The Englishman lies in second place after the 10th stage of the event and is in a strong position to score the result he needs to overhaul Colin McRae's WRC points lead. But the Englishman says if he takes it too easy, the risk of a mistake could be greater.

"If you back off too much, things like the differentials don't work properly," he said. "So it is actually easier and safer to drive at 90 percent rather than 70 percent. I can see a lot of people waving and clapping as I go by and I can assure them I've got my fingers crossed in the car just as they have."

Burns reported that this morning's stages have gone well. "I'm pretty relaxed, but I've got a bit to concentrate on still," he said. "They were two good stages and we're confident that we can do the other seven just like that."

His co-driver Robert Reid said: "We're happy. It's foggy, it's muddy, so there is no point taking risks. The stages this afternoon are being used for the second time, as we drove them yesterday, so they may be cut up a little bit, but it shouldn't be a problem."
