DTM star Mattias Ekstrom to contest X Games Munich

Two-time DTM champion Mattias Ekstrom will become the latest star name to compete in rallycross this year when he takes part in this weekend's X Games Munich

The Swede will contest the Munich event, which is also the latest round of the Global Rallycross Championship, in a Marklund Motorsport Volkswagen Polo supercar alongside team regular Anton Marklund.

He will then remain with the squad for the following weekend's European championship round at Holjes in Sweden before resuming his regular DTM duties with Audi at the Norisring.

Ekstrom tested the Polo at the Estering circuit in Germany last week, saying: "It's an extreme car with incredible power considering it's so small. I have never driven a car quite like this before.

"I have to learn the driving style quickly and find a set-up that suits me in a very short time as the competition is very hard and very aggressive."

Other big names to compete in rallycross this year include Petter Solberg, who is contesting the full ERX series, Sebastien Loeb and Johan Kristoffersson.

Two-time World Rally champion Carlos Sainz was due to drive the Red Bull-backed Marklund Polo at X Games Barcelona last month, but was denied the chance when bad weather forced the event to be cancelled.
