Rinaldo Capello Q&A
For the second year in a row Rinaldo Capello qualified his Audi on pole position for the Le Mans 24 Hours. The Italian set his best time during the third and penultimate session in the twilight hours as the temperature was starting to drop. His pole lap beat Martin Brundle's 1999 qualifying best to set a new record for the post Group C era. Afterwards he spoke about his chances of success that has so far eluded him at La Sarthe
"I cannot explain it. When I'm on the soft tyre and I know that I have to set a time I just feel good in the car."
"I can't talk about that because I know that Johnny (Herbert) will start the race. But I think it's important for us to keep position during the opening laps because it's easy to lose many seconds at the beginning. We saw last year that the Dome was so quick down the straight that it was hard to overtake it once it took the lead. So I think its important for the Audi's to hold position and try to establish an advantage over the opposition from the start."
"On the first day of qualifying the car was not easy to drive but it was a lot better today. We are still not happy with the set-up of the car compared to how it felt during pre-qualifying but I'm confident that the engineers will have corrected that before the race on Saturday."
"In terms of speed the ORECA was very good, but for the race I think Bentley will be good even though there's only one of them. They did lots of endurance testing before the race so I think they will be stronger on Saturday and Sunday than they were today. Also the MG surprised us with how quick they were. To do a 32s in a 675 car impressed us a lot."
"It's always difficult to win the race here because you need a lot of luck. I hope that Audi can win and I hope that I'm in the right car but it's hard to say at the moment. But we really need that big trophy at Ingolstadt."
"I particularly like the Porsche curves and the back section of the track. I don't think much of the new section though. It's good to have two extra corners, but in traffic it's very hard to overtake. The braking point before the 'S' is now worse than it was before too, because the track there is very bumpy and it's easy to make a mistake and miss the line."
