Capello smashes track record in qualifying

Audi's pole position star Rinaldo Capello set a new qualifying record on Thursday, eclipsing Martin Brundle's 1999 post-Group C mark

Capello's 3m29.905s lap was 0.034s under Brundle's mark, set in a Toyota GT-ONE. This is despite a 45-metre extension to the track after the Dunlop chicane to incorporate the new Tertre Rouge Esses.

His team-mate, three-time grand prix winner Johnny Herbert, will start the car from pole on Saturday.

"This proves just how quick we are," said Herbert. "We've not only got a very fast car but one that is exceptionally reliable backed up by two previous Le Mans wins. Three factory-entered Audis head the grid which bodes well. But we need to repeat that performance for 24 hours when the race gets underway."

Despite the car's pace, Herbert is not entirely content with the handling of his R8, however.

"We're not 100 percent happy with the balance of the car," he said. "Speed-wise we're okay, but we have the warm-up session on Saturday to try a few things. It's gonna be a tough race, and the fact that we're starting at the front won't change the fact that it is a very long race. Speed won't be a problem, and hopefully the reliability will be there too."
