Bentley confirms Le Mans return
Despite recent doubts over its racing future, the Bentley name will return to contest the Le Mans 24 Hours next year with a revised version of its EXP Speed 8 which finished on the podium at its first attempt in 2001
The news that sister company Audi will bid for a third successive Le Mans win was thought to scupper Bentley's attack, but the British marque will continue its programme nonetheless.
Recently-elected chairman Franz-Josef Paefgen confirmed that next year's challenger will feature a new, larger engine.
"Within the current regulations we have not been able to reach the full potential of the EXP Speed 8 and are now developing, in conjunction with Audi, a new and exclusive Bentley engine with increased capacity," said Paefgen. "As the new engine will not be ready before March, we believe that the real title challenge for Bentley will come in 2003.
"The team gained valuable experience this year, and we will be doing everything in our power to ensure Bentley is back on the podium next year, but we know we will face some very tough competition," he added.
Bentley is currently reviewing its driver line up, although none will be confirmed until the New Year. Racing Technology Norfolk will continue to oversee the development of the cars.
