Audi sets pace in Spa practice

Audi topped the opening practice session for the second round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, but also suffered a setback as one of its other brand new R18 TDIs wound up damaged after a collision with the tyres

Dindo Capello set the pace in 2m03.844s in the car that he shares with Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen, putting their car a shade under two tenths of a second up on the sister car of Mike Rockenfeller/Romain Dumas/Timo Bernhard as the German manufacturer locked out the top two positions.

It was not to be a 1-2-3 on the R18's competitive debut, however, as Benoit Treluyer, driving the car he is sharing with Andre Lotterer and Marcel Fassler, suffered a moment of snap oversteer while passing a slower GTE car.

Treluyer spun into the gravel and nudged the tyres, damaging his machine's front end and bringing out the red flags.

The car's best time was, however, good enough for fourth behind the best of the factory Peugeot 908; that of Simon Pagenaud/Sebastien Bourdais/Pedro Lamy.

The other Peugeots of Franck Montagny/Stephane Sarrazin/Nicolas Minassian and Marc Gene/Alex Wurz/Anthony Davidson completed the top six, while the championship-leading ORECA 908 was next up with Olivier Panis/Loic Duval/Nicolas Lapierre.

The Strakka Racing HPD of Jonny Kane/Danny Watts/Nick Leventis set the pace in LMP2 while Hope Racing led the way in the FLM class.

It was a Ferrari one-two-three in the GTE Pro category as the AF Corse machines of Giancarlo Fisichella/Gimmi Bruni and Jaime Melo/Toni Vilander led the way, ahead of the Rob Bell/James Walker JMW car.

Porsche's best representative was the Felbermayr car of Marc Lieb/Richard Lietz in fourth, while the best BMW was that of Andy Priaulx/Uwe Alzen, a second off the pace in fifth.

Ferrari also led the way in GTE Am, the CRS Racing 430 of Adam Christodoulou/Klaas Hummel/Phil Quaife setting the pace.
