9hrs: Davies hit by penalty

Audi UK's Jamie Davies leads this year's Le Mans 24 Hours after nine hours, despite having to serve a 30s stop-and-go penalty for passing under yellows. The Veloqx Audi R8, co-driven by Johnny Herbert and Guy Smith has led every lap of the race so far but is now less than two and a half minutes in front of the chasing Team Goh Audi

With Davies taking over from Herbert, who quadruple stinted in the preceding hours, Team Goh put Rinaldo Capello in its car and the Italian is charging hard to close the gap to the leader.

Third is still the Pescarolo C60 in the hands of former F1 driver Eric Comas. The French car is now running four laps off the lead but still holds a lap's advantage over Martin Short in the Rollcentre Dallara.

Amazingly, despite its 170mph shunt in the second hour, JJ Lehto is now fifth in the Champion Audi. The Finn is two laps behind the British-run Dallara, but at his current pace will catch it by dawn.

Oliver Gavin's Corvette leads the GTS class and sixth place overall but he is still embroiled in a battle with the Prodrive Ferrari currently in the hands of Alain Menu.

The next three cars are all comeback stories. The Kondo Dome coasted into the pits in the early stages with a technical problem but has since run trouble-free and has worked its way back up to eighth. Andy Wallace has dragged the Zytek back into contention after the car has suffered two punctures and the Justin Wilson/Ralph Firman/Tom Coronel Dome is flying in tenth after its earlier gearbox debacle.

The pressure is off the Sascha Maassen White Lightning Porsche after its main pursuer, Stephane Ortelli's Freisinger car, took a trip into the gravel and is now two laps behind the GT class leader.
