Tander takes narrow win in race two

Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander took a narrow victory in race two of the NRMA Motoring & Services Grand Finale at Oran Park after spending most of the race fighting off Steven Richards and Russell Ingall

Another Jamie Whincup victory appeared to be on the cards in the early laps, but a failure in the driveline while comfortably leading the group of drivers who had pitted meant his race ended early for the first time this year.

With Whincup's demise, Tander took full advantage, having gained a place at the start, taken another place from Courtney as they completed lap one and another from Steven Richards on lap nine.

A bit of confusion between Russell Ingall as he exited his pit and James Courtney as he entered his was just enough to see Ingall resume behind Richards, which proved even more crucial when Tander emerged ahead of both of them.

Richards and Ingall didn't give up, Richards pressuring Tander hard before Tander edged away. But in the closing laps Tander again had a pair of cars right behind him, but he held on while with two laps remaining, Ingall snuck through to take second place.

Rick Kelly, Craig Lowndes and James Courtney were a few seconds further back, Kelly and Lowndes spending most of the race fighting for position, Lowndes getting close to pulling the move off but not succeeding.

A disappointing weekend for Mark Skaife in his final event as a full-time driver continued, contact early in the race forcing him to make an unscheduled pitstop. When he later made his compulsory pitstop, he felt a problem at the rear of the car soon after, suspecting a loose wheel, and pitted a third time.

His pitcrew looked at the right rear but could see no problem, but just a few laps later Skaife retired after the right rear tyre went flat.
