Tander takes Bathurst pole

Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander has taken pole position for tomorrow's Supercheap Auto 1000 at Bathurst after today's shootout for the top ten grid positions

Tander was the sixth car to hit the track but took half a second off the best time set to that point by Paul Dumbrell, Tander's 2:07.2963 the only shootout lap that was faster than the lap the same car achieved in qualifying.

The three cars that followed of James Courtney, Jamie Whincup and Jason Richards went successively slower, struggling particularly in the final sector.

Last car out was provisional pole man Mark Winterbottom, and at the end of the second sector he was six hundredths of a second up on Tander. But he couldn't match Tander in the final sector and set a time of 2:07.4206, just over a tenth slower.

Courtney was third fastest, ahead of Paul Dumbrell, who will now be partnered by Rick Kelly after the car he was to share with Paul Radisich hit the wall heavily at McPhillamy in morning practice when the throttle stuck open, Radisich taken to hospital with a broken ankle, the car too badly damaged to continue.

An aggressive Jamie Whincup probably tried a little too hard and ended up fifth-fastest, alongside Jason Richards who set a time of 2:06.9076 in the morning's practice session to become the second-fastest driver ever around the circuit, behind his teammate Greg Murphy.

Will Davison, Russell Ingall, Fabian Coulthard and Max Wilson complete the top ten, Wilson taking part in the shootout after Rick Kelly and Paul Radisich's number 15 car was withdrawn.
