Tander storms to Sandown pole
Garth Tander did his best to bounce back from a disastrous Oran Park round by taking pole position for Sunday's Betta Electrical 500 at Sandown
Tander, who this weekend is sharing a car with Mark Skaife at Holden Racing Team, was fastest by nearly three-quarters of a second in the top ten shootout, having just missed out on the fastest time in qualifying.
Alongside him will be Craig Lowndes in the Triple Eight Ford he will be sharing with Jamie Whincup, followed by Ford Performance Racing's Jason Bright and Mark Winterbottom.
The top five is completed by a surprising pair of cars, the WPS Racing Fords of Max Wilson and David Besnard, and Jason Bargwanna and Craig Baird.
The star of qualifying was V8 Supercar rookie Ryan Briscoe, who stormed to the top of the times going into the shootout. However, in the shootout he was only able to set the seventh fastest time in the car he will share with Jim Richards, and will start ninth after losing two places for too many laps in practice.
Another to shine was Steve Owen in the Autobarn Holden, who was seventh in qualifying before dropping to tenth in the shootout, in the car he will share with Tony Longhurst.
Some of the top runners did not have great days. Rick Kelly and Todd Kelly will start twelfth in their Toll HSV Dealer Team Holden, Russell Ingall and Luke Youlden's Stone Brothers Ford was fifteenth fastest, one place ahead of the Jack Daniel's Racing Holden of Steven Richards and Paul Dumbrell.
The Team Sirromet Wines Commodore of Paul Morris and Steve Ellery was 24th fastest in qualifying but will start from the rear after failing to slow immediately and return to pit lane when red flags were displayed, Morris also receiving a $5 000 fine.
