No V8 support race for Australian GP
V8 Supercars will not support the Australian Grand Prix next year after a row over clashing dates
With the Australian Grand Prix Cooperation preparing to hold the opening round of the Formula One season on March 15-18 next season, the Aussie tin-top series organisers believe there is not enough time between that and the following weekend's round in Perth, on the other side of the country.
The 2007 V8 calendar was drawn upon the belief that the Formula One race would be held a week later.
"We are disappointed that we won't be attending and have notified [Grand Prix Corporation chief executive] Tim Bamford, who was surprised but accepting of our decision," Supercars chief Wayne Cattach said.
"It is physically impossible for our teams to compete at the Grand Prix and turn around just a few days later in Perth.
"Our planning for 2007 has been underway for several months. With the Grand Prix a non-championship event, our first priority is to the regular championship season, our teams and the host broadcaster."
V8 Supercars have traditionally raced at the Australian Grand Prix as a non-championship round.
