Jamie Whincup gives Holden its 400th V8 Supercars race win at Symmons Plains
Jamie Whincup stretched his V8 Supercars championship lead to 194 points with two events remaining and gave Holden its 400th win in the series as he fended off the Ford Performance Racing cars to take his second triumph of the weekend at Symmons Plains
Triple Eight driver Whincup had started only third behind FPR's Paul Dumbrell and Mark Winterbottom, and lost another place to Shane van Gisbergen (Stone Brothers Ford) off the line.
The points leader repassed van Gisbergen before the opening lap was out, and then quickly closed on leaders Dumbrell and Winterbottom.
Whincup pitted on lap 20, a lap before the FPR pair, and managed to jump both of them, helped by Dumbrell taking a quick trip off the road on the way out of the pits.
Fellow FPR man Will Davison also gained from the stops, coming in at the same time as Whincup and managing to jump from fifth to second. He kept the pressure on Whincup thereafter, never letting the leader relax, but the Triple Eight driver was able to stay in front and finally win by 1.7 seconds.
Winterbottom and Dumbrell were not far behind in third and fourth, while Whincup's team-mate and title rival Craig Lowndes charged through from 15th on the grid after a mistake in qualifying to finish fifth. His final move was on Holden Racing Team driver Garth Tander, who completed the top six.
The rest of the top 10 spots went to van Gisbergen, Todd Kelly (Kelly Holden), Jonathon Webb (Tekno Ford) and Fabian Coulthard (Walkinshaw Holden).
Further back, Cameron McConville was given a chance to make a short-notice return to the series when Brad Jones Racing's Jason Bright had to pull out after qualifying due to a rib injury sustained yesterday. McConville managed to lead the race for a while due to an alternative pit strategy, and finished 19th from the back of the grid.
