News in Brief

Irish commuter Stephen Mawhinney claimed his second Classic FF1600 win in a row at Oulton. Mawhinney and team-mate James Hagan commute to every race thanks to support from Norse Irish Ferries. In late May they will host a round of the BARC/BRSCC championship at Kirkistown.

Having had his truck and Formula Ford Swift stolen late last year, Paul Wighton has done a deal to race Mike Waite's Van Diemen RF91 this season in the NW FF1600 Championship. The alliance got off to a good start at Oulton with a fighting second. 'My car was never found so I did a deal with Mike for this year,' said Wighton, who also lost all his tools and spares in the robbery.

Neil McArthur, the new sponsor of the NW FF1600 Championship through his Opal Telecommunications business, has put his Van Diemen RF86 under the care of Mike Waite this season. He started the season with seventh place in the opening round at Oulton.

NW FF1600 regular Julian White has graduated to the ex-Justin Sherwood Swift SC94K. White gave the car a debut run at Oulton. The Swift, one of the last Kent cars built, was previously run by Don Hardman.

Although he started the season with a win, Alaric Gordon is still seeking backing to continue in the NW FF1600 Championship. The support of Richard Peacock will ensure 'Pod' contests the first couple of races but after that plans are uncertain.

After a part season in the Ford Credit Fiesta series, Mike Hartley has returned to his roots in the Fiat Racing Challenge. However, his car refused to run for more than a lap at Oulton on Good Friday and he was forced to park at Knickerbook on the warming-up lap.

Norwegian Thomas Brathe made his UK debut in his FF1600 Swift SC94K at Oulton. He tackled the Oulton and Brands races over the Easter weekend before taking the car home to contest his domestic championship. The 19-year old from Oslo retired at Oulton with mechanical dramas.
