Black Falcon Mercedes team to try British GT at Spa

Leading European GT squad Black Falcon will join this weekend's round of the British GT Championship at Spa, in a move that could pave the way for more outings in the series

The German squad, which has twice won the Nurburgring 24 Hours endurance showpiece, has entered two Mercedes-AMG GT3s into the two-hour race around the Belgian venue.

The first car will be driven by former FIA European F3 champion and double Macau GP winner Daniel Juncadella and Briton Oliver Morley. Abdulaziz Al Faisal will share the second entry with Miguel Toril.

Black Falcon team head Team boss Sean Paul Breslin told Autosport: "All four drivers will be running together in the Spa 24 Hours [July 26-31], so on one hand it's a great chance for a warm-up, but we also wanted to have a closer look and experience British GT.

"Oliver used to race in British GT and wanted to have another crack at it and it's a very strong series at the moment, and has been in recent years.

"There's a good mixture of professional drivers and talented amateurs, so we know it won't be easy.

"I'd like to think this race will lead to more British GT appearances, but we'll have to see how it goes."

European team Grasser Racing will also join the GT3 field with a brace of Lamborghini Huracans. British Touring Car Championship regular Hunter Abbott will share the first with Rolf Ineichen. Ronald Holling and Michele Beretta will drive in the sister car.

Abbott, who drives a Power Maxed Racing Chevrolet Cruze in the BTCC, said: "My old GT engineer now works for Grasser, and he got in touch about this opportunity.

"We are in the middle of a long break between BTCC races and this fitted in perfectly for me.

"It will be the first time that I have driven a car with all the electronic gizmos and things like that, so it will be a challenge.

"But what better a track to experience that on than at Spa. It was an offer I couldn't turn down."

The grid for British GT's two-hour race at Spa has attracted a total of 60 cars, with 17 GT3 entries boosted by 15 GT4s and a further 28 cars from the European GT4 Series and KTM Reiter Young Stars class.
