Fortec to join BRDC Formula 4 from Autumn Trophy

British single-seater outfit Fortec Motorsports will enter the BRDC Formula 4 Championship when the series introduces its new car later this year

Richard Dutton's team, which competes across Europe in Formula Renault 3.5, the Formula 3 European Championship and Formula Renault 2.0, has purchased three of BRDC F4's new Tatuus-Cosworth F4-016 cars ahead of its debut in the Autumn Trophy in November.

Fortec already competes in MSA Formula, Britain's FIA F4-rules championship.

Dutton said that BRDC F4's new, faster car means that the category will fill a gap on the UK scene left by the collapse of British F3 at the end of last year.

"We're excited to be part of BRDC F4 because it's what British motorsport needs as the new car will fill the void left by the demise of British F3," he said.

"The FIA wants British F3 to come back using the current car, but that will prove too expensive to work at a national level so this is the next best thing.

"The new car has 230bhp, good aero and lap times around the same level as F3 already so it is the closest thing you can get to British F3.

"Personally I've been around British F3 since the late 1970s and Britain desperately needed a replacement for it as there's a big jump between MSA Formula and European F3.

"Running in BRDC F4 gives our drivers an extra option. They can start in MSA Formula, then gain experience of a faster, more aero-dependent car in BRDC F4 before deciding to go into Europe in FRenault or even F3.

"We've already got a lot of interest in the Autumn Trophy seats so we'll be there from the first race."

BRDC F4 founder Jonathan Palmer welcomed the arrival of Fortec.

"I am delighted to welcome Fortec to our BRDC F4 Championship with our new Tatuus-Cosworth car.

"Fortec are clearly one of the most successful single-seater race teams outside of F1 with huge experience and success.

"Their participation is a great endorsement of the appeal of our 2016 BRDC F4 Championship, which fits perfectly into the big existing gap between FIA F4 and FIA F3."

Will Palmer wrapped up the 2015 BRDC F4 title at Donington Park last weekend, driving for HHC Motorsport.
