Weather postpones Nationwide race

Rain has continued to affect the schedule of events at Fontana on Saturday, forcing NASCAR officials to postpone the running of the Nationwide Series Stater Bros 300 for Sunday

The race is now scheduled to start an hour after the Auto Club 500 Sprint Cup series race is finished on Sunday, although the weather forecasts are not very promising, with a 70 per cent chance of rain and showers expected in the afternoon, when both events are expected to run.

Although the day got off to a better start than Friday, with sunny skies despite low temperatures, the afternoon was once again a rainy one, forcing the Sprint Cup Series only practice session to end before schedule.

The track conditions were good enough again to start the Nationwide Series race at one point, but the rain returned and weather forecasts made it unlikely to run the event later as the current conditions are expected to continue into Sunday morning.

Saturday's schedule had already been modified following the rain on Friday that led to the cancellation of all events.

Nationwide Series qualifying on Saturday was replaced by a practice session in the morning, where Kyle Busch was fastest before competing and winning the Craftsman Truck series race later.

The starting order for the Stater Bros 300 has been set based on the final 2007 owner points standing, meaning the No. 29 Richard Childress entry driven by Jeff Burton will start from pole, beside Daytona winner Tony Stewart and ahead of current Nationwide Series champion Carl Edwards.

No drivers were left out of the grid as there were only 42 cars entered for the event, one short of a full field.

Dario Franchitti, who was 12th in practice, will start the race from 22nd.
