Stricklin out of Winston Cup series
NASCAR veteran Hut Stricklin is searching for a drive, after his team pulled out of the Winston Cup Series
Team owner Scott Barbour has closed SBIII Motorsports one week after Stricklin re-signed a three-year contract with the outfit, claiming a sponsor failed to meet its financial obligations.
'I was as surprised as anybody,' Stricklin told US newspapers. 'I got a phone call from Scott telling me the sponsorship cheque wasn't any good, and basically he wasn't in a position to run the team any more out of his own pocket.'
Stricklin, who has been racing in the Winston Cup series for 11 years, has been left without a drive for the remaining three races of the season - and 2000.
'I'm devastated, totally,' he said. 'Here you are, a couple of weeks into a three-year deal and thinking you're set, only to have this blow up...I feel I've got five or six good years of driving left. I still want to drive. I still enjoy it, and I still want to win races.'
