Rain can't stop Burton at Darlington

When the skies opened up for the second time at Darlington Raceway, Jeff Burton was right where he needed to be to win the Pepsi Southern 500

Burton's win on Sunday under a red flap because of the rain, gave him a Darlington sweep for the 1999 season, along with a second No Bull 5Million and his 10th career victory.

'To win the Southern 500 is awfully big,' exclaimed the younger Burton, adding it was the one race he really wanted to win.

There have been only nine sweeps at Darlington since 1950, and the last by a Ford driver prior to Sunday was Bill Elliott in 1985.

Burton's older brother, Ward, was right in line behind the #99 Exide Batteries Ford as the field came around under the caution for the checkers for a second runners-up position ehind his brother this season. The first was in March at Las Vegas.

Following the Burton brothers were Jeremy Mayfield, Mark Martin, Kevin Lepage, Joe Nemechek, Bobby Hamilton, Rusty Wallace, Ken Schrader and Steve Park to round out the top-10. Jeff Gordon finished 13th after starting fourth on the grid.

Jeff and Ward Burton, Mayfield, Martin and Lepage are now eligible for the final No Bull 5 Million which will take place at Talladega Superspeedway for the Winston 500 in October.

Dale Jarrett, who crashed in first-round qualifying on Friday and could only muster enough speed for a 36th-place start, finished 16th after pitting on the backstretch.

Jarrett still holds the championship points lead by 168 over Martin, having lost 146 points in the past two events.
