NASCAR set to further limit Cup drivers' Xfinity and Truck racing
NASCAR is considering putting additional limits on drivers from its top-line Cup series competing in the supporting Xfinity and Truck categories
The new limits should be announced in the next couple of weeks, Xfinity Series director Wayne Auton said on Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Currently, Cup series drivers with more than five years of experience are limited to a maximum of 10 races in the Xfinity Series and seven in Trucks.
Drivers with that experience level are also prohibited from competing in the lower tiers' playoff races.
Multiple sources have told Autosport that a new limit of five races in both series is likely when the revised rules are announced.
"Going forward we have been in talks with teams about limiting the number of races more, or even staying where we're at," Auton said.
"Those conversations are ongoing so stay tuned.
"Something should be coming out soon on what the garage area has asked us to look at."
Auton emphasised that the younger Xfinity drivers welcome the chance to take on Cup racers.
"NASCAR racing is set for a long time with the talent that we've got with the young guns that are out there," he said.
"Then you have the old wily veterans.
"There are limitations we set forth this year and I think everyone accepted them.
"We want to make sure we have 40 race cars on the track every week and 40 competitive cars every week.
"I'm very proud of how our Xfinity drivers have held up this year.
"They are really driving hard this year to make sure they have a chance to get in the playoffs and go down to Homestead and get that championship."
Cup drivers have continued to monopolise Xfinity race wins this season, with only four victories in the 17 rounds so far going to drivers focused on the second-tier series.
But Kyle Busch's two Truck victories are the only wins for Cup racers in that class this year.
