NASCAR gives final approval to 2013 Sprint Cup models from four participating manufacturers

NASCAR has told manufacturers they can commence production of their 2013 Sprint Cup cars after the new designs were given final approval

The new models, which will better resemble the street versions of Chevrolet's SS, Ford's Fusion, Toyota's Camry and Dodge's Charger, will make their competitive debut next year at Daytona in February following two years of development.

The final approval was based upon results from aerodynamic testing earlier this month, as NASCAR tried to equalise downforce and drag levels for all four different models.

Teams are expected to run them for the first time next month at Martinsville, while further test sessions will take place at Talladega, Texas and Kansas later this year.

"We commend the manufacturers and our team at the R&D centre on all the hard work they've put into this new car," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition.

"With all the designs and surface areas of the car now approved, manufacturers can now move forward with building the components needed to outfit their cars.

"The windtunnel testing we've had with the manufacturers over the past several months has given us the timely and necessary data we needed to come to this confirmation. We believe the new car is going to be a milestone opportunity for our sport, one that our fans will embrace."

While it remains to be seen which team will lead Dodge's Cup effort following Penske's switch to the blue oval brand, Ford Racing director James Allison said the new models are a response to what NASCAR fans wanted to see on the track.

"This is a monumental moment for the sport, for the fans and for us as a company with our participation in NASCAR," said Allison. "The fans have clamoured for the return of cars that look like cars in their driveways and NASCAR, alongside us as manufacturers, have listened to that request.

"We are very proud of all the hard work and collaboration between NASCAR and the OEMs that was completed with the submission test, and now we are ready to go forward with the new face of NASCAR that is the 2013 Fusion."

Last week Chevrolet also revealed the new Camaro that the bow-tie brand is set to run in the 2013 Nationwide Series.
