Michigan Cup race postponed again

Rain has forced NASCAR officials to postpone the running of the 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway for the second consecutive day

The original start time of midday had to be pushed back because yesterday's rain continued into the morning but then stopped shortly before noon.

Officials worked in vain for hours to try to dry the track, running nearly sixty safety vehicles on the wet asphalt and a jet dryer. Their work was almost complete but then some drizzle brought hopes to get the race going to a halt shortly before 3 pm.

With the forecast showing high probability of more rain later in the afternoon and the satellite images backing that up, NASCAR officials had no alternative but to postpone the race until Tuesday, with start time scheduled for 10:00 am US Eastern time on Tuesday.

There is a 30 per cent chance of rain in Tuesday however, and if the race cannot go ahead on Tuesday, Wednesday would be the last day to try to complete the event. However, many fans have already given up on seeing any racing and have packed up and left.

If after Wednesday the race has not take place, NASCAR is considering rescheduling it for November 23, making it the last race of the season. However, even if rain is not a worry then, snow could be, which makes this alternative look rather unlikely.

There are no other alternatives for a different date right now under such scenario, as the Nextel Cup schedule does not have a weekend off until the season is over at Homestead.
