Michigan Cup race postponed
For the fourth time this season, rain has forced NASCAR officials to postpone the start of a Nextel Cup event for the next day, after continuous rain at Michigan International Speedway prevented the 3M Performance 400 to go ahead
NASCAR was expecting rain to stop in order to dry the track and attempt to start the race two hours later than scheduled, but the forecast for the rest of the day showed there is high probability that the rain would return later.
The race has thus been rescheduled for Monday, starting at 12:00 pm US Eastern Time, although the weather forecast shows little sign of the rain stopping tomorrow, with probability of showers well above 50 per cent and further thunderstorms expected late in the afternoon.
Officials said that if the race cannot be held Monday, it would be rescheduled for Tuesday and even Wednesday, as current forecasts still show high rain probability for those days.
If by Wednesday the race cannot be completed at all, it could even be rescheduled for another date later in the season. That would probably alter the running for the Chase for the Nextel Cup, with the 26th race not being Richmond but New Hampshire a week later.
Previously this year races at Richmond, Darlington and Dover were postponed to the next day due to rain, and the first race of the year at Pocono had to be shortened also due to rain.
