Leffler takes Toyota's first Busch win

Jason Leffler gave Toyota their first Busch Series victory on Saturday night in the Kroger 200 at O'Reilly Raceway Park, overtaking Greg Biffle with two laps remaining

Leffler led only the last two laps of the race but was a frontrunner for most of the night. He made the most of the last restart with five laps to go, to make his way from third to first in just three laps thanks to some additional grip relative to his rivals due to a late stop for tires which saw him drop down to 12th.

"This was just real exciting to win like that at the end - beating and banging all the way through the final laps," Leffler said, after taking only his second Busch Series win in 139 starts, and the first of his last 83 races.

"I just had a lot of fun tonight. I really wanted to be the one to do it and I'm really happy for Todd (Braun) and our whole team for being the ones to pick up the win.

"I'm pretty excited to have my name going into the history books as Toyota's first Busch Series winner."

Leffler's overtaking maneuvers in the closing laps were quite aggressive and he even made contact first with fellow Toyota driver David Reutimann and then also with Biffle. The frustration of the former was obvious as Leffler snatched the honour of giving Toyota their maiden series victory.

"He (Leffler) drove underneath and knocked in our right front fender in and it made our car tight after that," Reutimann said.

"It's hard to pass here and you have to do stuff like that towards the end, but it was the third time he did it. I'm just disappointed in that, but I'm real happy with my guys - they did a great job."

Biffle was the man in control for most of the second half of the race, leading 95 of the 200 laps while running a unique line right up against the wall through the whole lap. However, some changes he did to his car during the last stops didn't quite work as he expected.

"The handling was not very good all night," Biffle said. "We really struggled with our car but it was real super loose at the beginning of the race, I tightened it up and then I lost the race because I was too tight. I couldn't get the gas down and unfortunately the no.38 came and beat us because of that."

Points leader Carl Edwards, who raced with a brace on his right hand without any apparent problems, was in contention for the lead at one point and had an entertaining battle with Biffle, changing places repeatedly. In the last 50 laps though he slid back and was no longer a threat for victory, but still came home in fourth.

Polesitter Aric Almirola looked untouchable for most of the first half of the race, easily leading for 87 laps, all of them in the first 100. His second half was not as strong, although he still ran in the top ten, eventually finishing sixth.

The race was marred by an incident in the pitlane, which took place on lap 18 when the No. 25 car of Richard Johns hit the front tyre carrier on Ron Hornaday's team, who was knocked in the ground. He was diagnosed with a broken big toe on his right foot in the infield care centre.
