Late yellow secures Jarrett win

Dale Jarrett's fuel gamble paid off and brought the Ford driver victory in the Pepsi 400 at Daytona on Saturday night. Jarrett's third victory of 1999 gives him a 177-point lead in the championship

Jarrett was one of several drivers who took on a minimal amount of fuel when the leaders pitted with 15 laps to go. Others, including Dale Earnhardt, opted to take on a full tank and new tyres.

Earnhardt's strategy dropped him to 11th after the stops, but with the advantage of having new tyres and no need to save fuel, he was able to scythe through the field.

Rapidly up to 8th place, his charge was halted when the yellows came out because of debris on the track, but when the race went green again, the NASCAR legend moved up to 2nd place and began to challenge Jarrett.

Luckily for him, a synchronised spin by Jeremy Mayfield and Jimmy Spencer meant another full course yellow in the dying moments. The race therefore behind the pace car, allowing Jarrett to cruise home safely. Even with the yellow, he only just won, running dry before he could complete the slowing down lap.

Third place went to Jeff Burton, who charged through the field after mechanical problems in qualifying forced him to start way back in 37th spot.

His Roush Racing team mate Mark Martin qualified 3rd but suffered a violent accident soon afterwards when a front tyre failure sent him flying into the wall.

Despite bruising his ribs, injuring his left leg and breaking his left wrist, Martin elected to start the race in his spare Ford Taurus. He chose to drop to the rear of the field at the start, but plugged away to finish the race 17th after a consistent and heroic drive.
