Kyle Busch on Phoenix Busch pole
Kyle Busch will start from pole position today in the Busch Series Basha's Supermarket 300 at Phoenix International Raceway, hoping to get his first victory after leading the most laps during the season
Busch set a fastest lap of 27.169 seconds at an average speed of 132.504 mph, claiming his second pole of the year and also his second at Phoenix.
In fact, Busch's lap would have put him on the second row for the Nextel Cup race, where the Car of Tomorrow features for the third time this season.
"It seemed to turn pretty well in practice and drive off the corner well," said Busch. "Hopefully we can finally get one (victory) for these guys, they've been trying awfully hard."
Busch was one of the final runners of the session, taking advantage of the increasingly cooler conditions to bump Clint Bowyer out of the top spot.
Bowyer was beaten only by 0.026 seconds, but both men were more than one tenth ahead of Matt Kenseth and Jeff Burton, both past winners at Phoenix.
Regan Smith was the fastest rookie in fifth and will share the third row of the grid with David Reutimann, who continued to show improvement for Michael Waltrip Racing and the Toyota contingent.
Points leader Carl Edwards qualified ninth while Roush Fenway teammate Greg Biffle, who has won at Phoenix twice in the Busch Series, will start today's race from 15th on the grid.
Juan Pablo Montoya will line up 20th, improving from his Nextel Cup qualifying. The Colombian was actually quicker in his Busch car than in his Cup car by more than one tenth of a second.
