Jarrett going for victory at Daytona

Former NASCAR Nextel Cup Champion Dale Jarrett says he will go for victory at Daytona this weekend, where he will be starting from pole position in the Budweiser Shootout.

Jarrett will be driving a Toyota Camry in a race for the first time, as the japanese manufacturer starts their maiden season in NASCAR's premiere division.

"I'm going to win, certainly," Jarrett said. "You don't have a lot of time to do a lot to the cars and there's not much you can do to them anyway.

"But I'll certainly test the waters as to where I can put my car, what situations can I get in, what does it like to do, and what does it not like to do. I'll put that in the memory bank."

The three-time Daytona 500 Champion says the Shootout will give him the chance to further tune his car for the Gatorade Duels that take place next week, ahead of the season opener.

"We've been out here and we've been in drafting practice and that gives you a little bit of an idea but it's still not race condition," he said.

"So I think (the Shootout) is going to show us what we need to be concentrating on and giving us a better idea."

"When everybody is out for Monday and Tuesday we'll probably be thinking about what happened in that race to be ready to incorporate those things we need to do on Wednesday and Thursday."

Jarrett is one of only two Toyota drivers who will be able to rely on NASCAR qualifying rules to secure a place on the grid for the Daytona 500, as he can take advantage of the champion's provisional rule.

However, he is confident his car is quick enough to save him using that rule.

"I'm not concerned about the qualifying aspect of it," he said. "Obvioulsy Michael (Waltrip) and David (Reutimann) are a little more anxious in that respect.

"I fully feel that with the car I've chose for the 500, even if I didn't have the champion's provisional to rely on, I could race my way in on Thursday. I feel that good about the car."
