Harvick backs fourth RCR team move

Kevin Harvick has shown his support for Richard Childress Racing's quest for taking on a fourth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team in 2009

RCR currently runs three cars for Jeff Burton, Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer in Cup and they now look set to expand their operation with a fourth car, matching Hendrick Motorsports and other top teams which have up to five cars in the top series.

The team has already signed General Mills as the sponsor for that fourth entry and they are currently seeking a driver.

Harvick says adding a fourth car only be good despite having a seemingly good chemistry among the current three teams. He also believes the new driver should be someone who makes an immediate impact and helps the team move forward.

"I think that whoever the driver is, it needs to bring something to the table," Harvick said. "We don't want to drag the other three teams down to make four mediocres. The three teams are running pretty well right now and we need someone to come in with an immediate impact to help the other three teams to go to another level.

"It's obviously going to be good from a financial standpoint, it's going to be good to have more information and more testing. All the aspects of it have to be good."

Harvick, who owns a team fielding cars in both the Nationwide and Craftsman Truck series, says that with a sponsor already in place for that fourth team they have now plenty of time before next season to set the team up properly.

"What we currently have is good and I think the way that RCR went about it is the right way to do it," he added. "Now they can go out as a group and find that right driver. Everybody understands it weren't as usual to go out and find the driver and then worry about trying to get a sponsor, which is hard to do.

"Everybody wanted the driver first so now that we have the sponsor we have a lot of time to get the right driver and crew chief and the pieces into place and do the things that you need to do to get that team competitive."

Bobby Labonte, who has recently been sponsored by General Mills in the No. 43 Petty Enterprises cars, has been among those linked to the role. Labonte has also raced for RCR in the Nationwide Series this year.
