Gordon: 'The critics inspired me'
Jeff Gordon has admitted that his fourth NASCAR Winston Cup title will be his sweetest, following claims from his critics that he was all washed up
The Californian looks certain to wrap up the title at Atlanta today with a race still to go. Although he has only qualified 24th, Gordon just needs to finish 32nd to beat Ricky Rudd to the crown. Alternatively, he only needs to take the start of the final two races to become champion.
NASCAR experts doubted Gordon's ability to win more titles following top crew chief Ray Evernham's decision to leave Hendrick Motorsport to set up his own team in 1999. Evernham has been given a lot of credit for Gordon's success and without him, the 30-year-old could only finish ninth in the Winston Cup last year.
"What's funny about people writing me off is you have to love the critics," Gordon said. "They are writing what is on their minds and they can inspire you in a lot of ways. They certainly inspired me and this team.
"This year is gratifying because we are doing it when people didn't think we could. I have to admit that makes me feel pretty darn good: when people doubt what you are capable of and you go out and show them."
Today's race in Atlanta starts at 5.30pm (GMT). Gordon has vowed to try and clinch the championship in style.
