Gordon positive about CoT decision
Nextel Cup points-leader Jeff Gordon says he agrees with NASCAR's decision to accelerate the implementation of the Car of Tomorrow (CoT), which will be raced full-time next year
Gordon had been arguably the most critical driver of the new car since he tested it for the first time. However, since the car made its debut at Bristol this year, the Hendrick team which Gordon drives for has won every single race where the Car of Tomorrow has featured.
Although this may play a part in Gordon's opinion, he says using only this car during next season will avoid the continuous comparisons between the new and the current specifications, where the Car of Tomorrow tends to lose out in most handling aspects to the older car.
"Yeah, it is [better]." said Gordon about racing only the Car of Tomorrow next year. "We're always going to continue to compare this car to the Monte Carlo, to the older car, and as long as you're comparing the two, then one is going to drive better than the other.
"But from the financial standpoint and the competition side of things, looking at new teams trying to start and where we're headed in the future, we're headed there anyway. I think the results have been good.
"I'm not saying this car is perfect and still needs some tweaking, but with miles we might just run it everywhere."
The Car of Tomorrow will be raced this year on almost every type of track. Only the 1.5-mile ovals are not included in the current roll-out schedule of the car this season, something Gordon believes could have been avoided by running it last week in the non-points All Star Challenge.
"The only thing I wish we would have done, was run that car on a mile-and-a-half track this year," Gordon added. "I'm a little disappointed that we're not going to get the opportunity to do that and I felt like the All-Star event was the perfect opportunity to do that."
After hitting out at the Car of Tomorrow earlier this year, Gordon claimed pole position at Bristol where the new car was raced for the first time. He then went on to take two of his three victories of the season with the new car at Phoenix and Darlington.
