Gordon hoping for fifth Glen win
Nextel Cup points' leader Jeff Gordon is hoping to revive his old success at Watkins Glen and take a fifth victory at the 2.45-mile road course this weekend
Gordon has the highest number of victories at the track with four wins to his name, the first three being back-to-back between 1997 and 1999, and his last one coming in 2001, more than five years ago.
"We used to have some great success at the Glen," Gordon said. "We got a little behind these past few years, but the two-day test that we had last week at Road Atlanta should really help us get back to the old advantages we used to have here."
Gordon and Hendrick teammate Jimmie Johnson lost any chance of victory at Sonoma earlier this year after their cars failed the opening day inspection and they were prevented from qualifying by NASCAR and so forced to start at the back of the grid.
Despite that, Gordon went on to finish a strong seventh and expects to get the most out of his team's preparations this time, after extensive testing was carried out by Hendrick Motorsports for this weekend's race, which will be a Car of Tomorrow event once again.
"I feel really good about our car this weekend," Gordon added. "I feel like we are going to be strong after all the testing we have done. We are fully committed to getting back to where we used to be on road courses and gain much-needed bonus points for victories before the 'Chase' beings."
"We are having a great season and we need to keep this momentum up. Your whole momentum can shift right at the beginning of the 'Chase.' We just need to continue to bring good race cars and finish consistently in order to carry over that momentum to the last 10 races."
Gordon currently leads the Nextel Cup standings by 271 points over Denny Hamlin and looks as the favorite to start the Chase at the top.
However, his massive points lead will shrink down from race 27, and his number of wins, which give him 10 extra points each, will provide the only cushion in the standings for the last ten races.
