Gordon and Kenseth take wins
Jeff Gordon made the day for race fans in his home state of
California on Sunday. Gordon not only took the his second win in theCalifornia 500 Presented by NAPA at California Speedway, he literally
dominated the entire 250 laps. Jeff Burton finished second, nearly 4.5
seconds behind the rainbow-colored #24 DuPont Chevrolet. Gordon now has 45
wins to his credit since he moved to the Winston Cup Series in 1993.
On a weekend when competitors were lined up according to owner points
standings due to heavy rains that fell on the Speedway on Friday, Gordon
started from the fifth spot. He quickly made his way to the front, and
despite being caught in the pits when Ricky Rudd crashed moving him deep into
the field, Gordon quickly sprung back. He is credited with leading 148 of the
250 laps run.
The Roush power teams suffered a disappointing day other than Burton's second
place effort. Mark Martin, the defending race winner, ended the day in 38th
place. Johnny Benson lost the handle on just the third circuit and destroyed
his ride. Kevin Lepage and Chad Little were still running at the end, albeit
two laps down to Gordon.
Conversely, Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Bobby Labonte and Rookie contender Tony
Stewart finished third and fourth, respectively, followed by Dale Jarrett,
Ward Burton, Jeremy Mayfield, Wally Dallenbach, Terry Labonte and Mike
Skinner.
The NASCAR Winston Cup Series will now take a weekend off in honor of Mother's
Day and will be back in action under the lights at Richmond International
Speedway on Saturday, May 15.
On Saturday, Matt Kenseth picked up his second win of the season with the
caution flag waving over the Auto Club 300 for the NASCAR Busch Series.
The 1998 Series champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. was clearly the dominating driver
until a spin to the grass on Lap 120 left him one lap behind. Earnhardt
showed he was the likely winner, despite losing third gear, when he made up
the lap to finish in the third spot just behind Jeff Burton. Burton was
following in Earnhardt's tire tracks when the spin occurred, but made it
through without contact.
Rookie contender Adam Petty finished a strong fourth, followed by Winston Cup
regular Elliott Sadler, still driving for recovering Andy Santerre.
The NASCAR Busch Series heads for New Hampshire International Speedway,
Loudon, New Hampshire next Sunday before joining the Winston Cup Series in
Richmond the following weekend.
