Fontana offers season's-best bonus
Fifty thousand dollars is on offer for the NASCAR Winston Cup Leader
Bonus this weekend.
Whoever wins this week's California 500 in Fontana and is the NASCAR
Winston Cup points leader at the completion of the event will receive
the money.
This season the bonus has been collected twice, first by Jeff Gordon
after he won the Daytona 500, and secondly by Jeff Burton at the
rain-shortened TranSouth Financial 400 in Darlington. It was the first
time he had won the bonus.
Burton, who also leads the current NASCAR Winston Cup point standings,
could add to his Darlington take.
After finishing 30th in the inaugural race at California Speedway,
Burton finished 10th in last year's California 500. The driver of the
Exide Batteries Taurus has finished 11th or better in eight of the nine
NASCAR Winston Cup races this season.
The current $50,000 amount represents the largest potential bonus of
this season and the largest since Gordon captured $60,000 in last year's
Pepsi 400 at Daytona.
