Elliott cuts back in 2004
NASCAR legend Bill Elliott will take a step towards retirement by cutting back to a part-time schedule next year. In spite of success late this season, the 48-year-old Elliott wants to cut down on the intense commitment of a full calendar
An announcement came today (Thursday) that he will drive between five and ten of next year's events. He will remain with Evernham Motorsports, whilst rookie Kasey Kahne will take his Dodge seat for the rest of the season.
Kahne raced in the secondary Busch series this year, and took his debut win at Homestead.
Elliott has said he wants to stay involved in racing and has suggested a role as a driver coach within Evernham Motorsports, which would fit with Ray's plans to develop a rookie. Evernham has said he will keep Elliott around in whatever role as long as Bill wants to stay.
The immensely popular Elliott won the championship in 1988 and has done much to ensure the massive growth of the series.
Jeremy Mayfield has already been confirmed as second driver in the Evernham squad.
