Edwards focused on more wins

Carl Edwards says he needs to focus on winning rather than on consistency if he is to keep up with Kyle Busch in the battle for this year's Sprint Cup

The Roush Fenway driver has won three races this season, only one less than championship leader Kyle Busch, although he was docked points following his victory at Las Vegas earlier this year due to a technical infringement.

Despite currently running in fourth place in the standings, he would effectively start the Chase for the Cup in second place and only twenty points behind Busch, given the points allocation for the top twelve drivers that enter the series' 'play-off'.

Edwards believes that he needs to win more races in order to remain in the battle for the championship, as winning a race gives a ten-point bonus towards his Chase seeding that becomes effective for the final ten races of the season.

"Number one priority is to make the chase because you can't win a championship if you're not in it," Edwards said.

"Number two is to win as many times as you can. You know, I was talking with (crew-chief) Bob Osborne about it. If Kyle Busch and I end up being - fighting for the championship at the end of the year, you know, what happened Sunday at Dover was literally like giving Kyle 20 points because we didn't get 10 and he did.

"So it is a 20-point difference in what could have been if we would have finished first. So winning is important."

Besides his three wins thus far, Edwards has finished another six times in the top ten this season and is having his best season start ever. Counting out an engine failure while leading at Atlanta and the tyre issues he faced at Talladega, only Kyle Busch can claim to have a better season thus far.

"Other than engine failures or running out of fuel, trying to gamble on fuel mileage, we've been great," Edwards said. "That's a big deal. This is a very tough sport. At this level, it's extremely tough.

"To be one of the guys and one of the teams every week that can run up front is - that's a really big deal, and it is a culmination of a lot of effort. I am definitely enjoying it.

"This is by far the best start to a season that I've had in the three or four years that I've been here. I am enjoying it. I mean, this is what we - this is what we hope for. As long as we can fix a couple little things and keep it going, it's going to be good."

Edwards will race next weekend in the Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono but will also compete on Saturday's Nationwide Series event at Nashville.
