Dutchman Vergers in Busch deal

Michael Vergers has won a chance to break into the USA's biggest form of racing, NASCAR - starting this weekend

The Dutchman, who made his name racing in Britain, has signed a deal with MB2/MBV Motorsports to race in NASCAR's secondary division, the Busch Series. He will make his debut on Saturday at the Michigan Superspeedway.

Vergers has landed the drive following his impressive performances in the lower ARCA stock car series this year. If he continues to show well, MB2/MBV could even take him into NASCAR's premier division, the Winston Cup, alongside its other drivers Kenny Schrader and Johnny Benson.

Team manager Jay Frye said that he first spotted Vergers' potential in an Atlanta ARCA race in March when he qualified and finished fourth.

"We saw that Michael was qualifying the car much higher than a rookie with virtually no oval racing experience in the US should be able to do, so we kept our eye on him," said Frye. "It became obvious that this guy has lots of talent, is quite smooth, and doesn't bang the car up. The fact that he never qualified outside of the top seven, and posted three qualifying runs and two top five finishes in his first eight races, was amazing."

Vergers first sampled stock car racing on ovals in the British ASCAR series at Rockingham. The experience convinced him to try his hand in the US.

"To have so quickly drawn the notice of a top NASCAR team like MB2/MBV Motorsports is beyond anything I might have expected," he said. "You can bet I will do everything I can to demonstrate that their instincts were correct."
