Childress renew Chevrolet deal

Richard Childress Racing announced on Saturday that they have renewed their contract with General Motors and will continue to be a Chevrolet team next year

RCR have been the longest running Chevrolet team in NASCAR, winning more than 160 races and 10 championships between Nextel Cup, Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series.

The team were also the first to win the title in all three divisions and won the Nextel Cup six times with legendary Dale Earnhardt.

"2008 marks Richard Childress's 39th year as a team owner and his cars proudly carry the Chevy bow-tie," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager.

"At Chevrolet and GM Racing, we are very excited to continue a long and successful relationship with one of the best racing organizations in NASCAR, both on and off the track."

RCR last won the Nextel Cup title in 1994 but currently have their three drivers in position to make the Chase for the Cup. Jeff Burton is currently sixth, ahead of Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick, who rank ninth and tenth respectively.

"I've always been Chevrolet," said team owner Richard Childress. "There was a couple years we got off and came right back, although it was a GM product.

"It's just been a great relationship. Without GM we couldn't have won those races and the technology they gave us just like the new Impala that we're going to be racing."

Childress is said to be considering adding a fourth team to his Nextel Cup effort next year, and has admitted talking to a number of drivers including JJ Yeley, who is leaving Joe Gibbs Racing, and even Indy 500 winner, Scotsman Dario Franchitti.

He is expected to decide on his fourth team next month.
