Busch makes history at Fontana

Kyle Busch made history at Auto Club Speedway on Saturday by winning two races in the same day, taking victory in the Nationwide Series hours after having won in the Trucks

The 23-year-old led 243 laps out of 250 he raced between the Camping World Truck Series and the Nationwide events at the two-mile oval. He had to work harder for his second win of the day than for the first one, but still came out undefeated looking in a class of his own all day.

Busch dominated most of the race and was only challenged when the last caution of the race came out following an incident involving Greg Biffle. As the leaders pitted, pole-sitter Carl Edwards won the race out of pit road, with Busch dropping to second behind him.

However on the restart with 16 laps remaining, Edwards was unable to fend off Busch and actually got shuffled down the order when he made slight contact with the Joe Gibbs driver, who dived on his inside to retake the lead.

Kevin Harvick watched the action unfold in front of him and made the most of the battle up front to briefly grab the lead. However that didn't last long as Busch drove on the outside of him showing once again his superiority on cold tyres.

From then on he did enough to stay up front, keeping Harvick and his rivals at bay to claim his second win of the day at Auto Club Speedway. The win allowed his crew chief Jason Ratcliff to make a winning comeback, returning after being suspended from his role by NASCAR last year.

"This is just a blast," said Busch, who will attempt to make three out of three on Sunday when he races in the Sprint Cup event. "To run like that here and beat guys like Carl (Edwards) and Kevin (Harvick) is pretty special. To win here twice in one day that's even more special.

"It was great to have (crew chief) Jason (Ratcliff) back. That really means a lot to us. We just get through practice quicker. Before we had to text him or call him or whatever and get changes made but now we can just buzz right through practice and like last night we only used fifteen minutes of the second one, so we're pretty cool."

In the closing laps a recovering Joey Logano heated up the battle for second with Harvick. The 18-year-old put the former Nationwide series champion under immense pressure but ran out of laps to put a decisive move on him.

Carl Edwards just managed to recover up to fourth place after dropping down the order on the last restart. His teammate David Ragan completed the top-five ahead of Richard Childress Racing's Jeff Burton.

The race saw only four caution periods, one of them following contact between Greg Biffle and Brad Keselowski, which sent the latter backwards into the wall. Biffle also caused the last caution when he crashed at turn two, while Michael McDowell brought out the first one when his car caught fire and left oil on the racetrack.

Following his victory Kyle Busch leads the driver standings, twenty points ahead of Carl Edwards.
