Busch confirms Hendrick exit
Kyle Busch confirmed he will be leaving Hendrick Motorsports at the end of the year to pursue opportunities with a new team, opening a place for Dale Earnhardt Jr to be his replacement
Busch, younger brother of 2004 Nextel Cup champion Kurt, made his Cup debut with Hendrick in 2004, taking part in only six races while competing in the Busch Series for the team. He then became Rookie of the Year in 2005 in his first full season, taking two victories.
Last year he made the Chase for the Cup and finished tenth in the standings winning only one race, while this year he sits currently tenth in the driver standings with one victory to his name in the inaugural Car of Tomorrow event at Bristol.
"We had been working on a contract extension for me to remain at Hendrick Motorsports, but after prolonged negotiations, we mutually agreed that a fresh start was in order," Busch said in a statement, following the announcement of Dale Earnhardt Jr's arrival at Hendrick next year.
"I have been granted a release after the 2007 season. I have tremendous respect for Mr [Rick] Hendrick and everyone at Hendrick Motorsports. It's where I grew up, and I have a lot of great memories.
"I kind of feel like I'm graduating. I'm excited about my future, and I know a lot of opportunities await because of what everyone at Hendrick did for me - on the track and off."
Busch had drawn some criticism this year in a few occasions for his behavior off the track. He was openly critical of the Car of Tomorrow when giving his first reactions to TV and radio, just after winning with it at Bristol.
He also left the track at Texas Motor Speedway when his crew was still trying to repair his car after an accident with Dale Earnhardt Jr, who actually drove the No. 5 car to the finish after being asked by the team once it was fixed to get back on track.
Busch stated that he will remain committed to Hendrick Motorsports for the rest of the year and said he will put all his efforts in trying to win more races before the end of the season.
"I still have a job to do this year and will give it my all - just as I've always done - to make sure we put the No. 5 car in victory lane a few more times before the year is out," Busch added.
