Busch confirms Gibbs' Toyota move
Kyle Busch confirmed today at California Speedway that his new team Joe Gibbs Racing will be switching to Toyota next season to become the Japanese manufacturer's leading outfit in the Nextel Cup
Although an official announcement has still to be made and is not expected until next week, Busch spoke ahead of schedule and broke the protocol when asked about Gibbs' move to Toyota.
"I think it's something that's going to take Joe Gibbs Racing hopefully a step forward and in the right direction," Busch said about JGR's switch from Chevrolet to Toyota.
"They've got a great reputation for being able to produce winning race cars year in and year out and championship-contending teams, so I think that they're going to be just fine and this is a business decision that they've done right."
Busch will leave Hendrick Motorsports at the end of the year to drive for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2008, beside two-time Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart, and twice Chase contender Denny Hamlin.
"Looking at years past in different series, you've got Toyota who came into CART and tore CART up in a few years," Busch added. "Then they came into the IRL and tore the IRL up. They've come into the (NASCAR Craftsman) Truck Series and they pretty much own the Truck Series now."
Joe Gibbs Racing have already scheduled a press conference at their headquarters in Huntersville, North Carolina next Wednesday to announce the move that will see them switch manufacturer for the first time since they joined NASCAR in 1992.
The team had enjoyed a very successful 16-year relationship with General Motors, which brought them three Nextel Cup titles, first in 2000 with Bobby Labonte and then in 2002 and 2005 with Tony Stewart, along with wins and pole positions in the lower rankings of NASCAR.
