Burton and team boss docked points

NASCAR included the team owner in its latest round of penalties, hitting Bill Davis with a 25-point deduction for a technical infraction found on his No. 22 car after the race Sunday at Martinsville

In the previous three points penalties announced this season, only driver and crew chief were penalised. Jimmie Johnson and the No. 48 team lost 25 points for offset trailing arm mounts at Daytona. Dale Jarrett and the 88 took a 25-point reduction for running too low at New Hampshire. Rusty Wallace and the No. 2 received a similar penalty for an unapproved spoiler at Talladega.

Davis' crime this time was improperly coiled front springs. NASCAR specified two years ago that coils be uniform in diameter and spacing top to bottom. Teams, however, try to use springs with different widths between the coils so as to get more variability in the spring rate.

As a result, Davis and driver Ward Burton were hit with 25-point deductions, and crew chief Frank Stoddard was fined $10,000.

The penalty drops Davies from 26th to 27th in owner points. A top-25 standing is significant in allocation of provisionals and plan money.
