All-Star format may change
Officials are considering making changes to the format of the NASCAR Nextel All-Star challenge event
The non-championship meeting, which offers a $1 million prize for the winner has run for more than 20 years, and has been held at Lowe's Motor Speedway for all but one of those years.
"We're getting together with NASCAR and Nextel to discuss some ways to tweak this thing," said Lowe's Motor Speedway president Humpy Wheeler.
"The bottom line is we are trying to find a way to put together two and a half hours of absolutely great racing."
Currently, drivers that have won a race in either the previous or current season are eligible, as well as any champions from the past ten years.
Then on the night itself, a race for all of the drivers who aren't eligible takes place, with the winner going through along with a driver voted for by the fans.
But NASCAR is looking at ways to incorporate its Pit Crew challenge, and add star drivers from its other series.
"I'd like to get more cars in the field," added Wheeler. "It's the All-Star challenge, so I don't see why the all-stars from the Busch and Truck series can't compete."
The format for the race itself is also to be reviewed. The 90-lap race is broken up into three segments, but Wheeler would like to see shorter segments to keep the action frantic.
