Tony Stewart docked points for qualifying infringement

Tony Stewart has been docked six points in the standings following a technical infringement during qualifying for last weekend's Sprint Cup race at Daytona

The reigning champion had qualified second but his time was later disallowed due to an unapproved open vent hose inside of his car.

However, starting from the back of the grid, Stewart then went on to claim his third victory of the season Saturday in the 400-mile event.

The six points lost have little impact in the standings as he continues to rank in fifth place, although now tied with Richard Childress Racing's Kevin Harvick.

Stewart's crew chief Steve Addington has been fined US$25,000 and placed on probation until August 22 while car chief Jeff Meendering received the same probation period.

"While we respect and accept NASCAR's decision, we want to be clear that there was no malicious intent," said Stewart Haas competition director Greg Zipadelli in a statement.

"In a rush to replace a cracked rear windshield that happened during tech inspection prior to qualifying, we jostled a cooling hose that was behind the seat. We understand NASCAR's position and will abide by its decision."

Stewart's win virtually locks him up as a Chase contender and he is still entitled to the three bonus points for his victory towards his seeding in the playoff.
