Gianni Morbidelli unbeatable in Donington Park Superstars races

Gianni Morbidelli completed a clean sweep at Donington Park by winning the second International Superstars Series race by more than three seconds

With the top eight from race one reversed, Morbidelli was forced to start on the fourth row. But thanks to the clearly superior speed of the Audi Sport Italia RS5 the former series champion was easily able to force his way through the field, muscling his way past team-mate Johan Kristoffersson to take the lead with nine minutes left to run. Once in front he stayed there, cruising to his second race win of the round.

Kristoffersson led the race at mid-distance, but was unable to match his team-mate's pace and eventually settled for second place. Tonio Liuzzi was a very lonely third in the CAAL Racing Mercedes.

Francesco Sini took an impressive fourth place in the Solaris Chevrolet, ahead of W&D BMW driver Paolo Meloni.

Sixth was Team Dinamic BMW's Thomas Biagi, but he did it the hard way. While running second early in the race the Italian ran off the road at McLeans, putting him towards the back of the field at mid-distance. What followed was an aggressive fightback, his reward sixth place.

Johnny Herbert (Team Swiss Maserati) was seventh following a mid-race scuffle with Tom Onslow-Cole (Ferlito Motors Jaguar), the incident contributing to Onslow-Cole retiring with a flat tyre.

Andrea Larini (Romeo Ferraris Mercedes) finished eighth after an up-and-down race. Having started from pole position, Larini lost his early lead when he had to pit with an engine problem. With that quickly rectified, he returned to the track and quickly fought his way back inside the top 10.

Andrea Boffo (Roma Racing Mercedes) and Mauro Cesari (Team Swiss Maserati) were ninth and 10th respectively.

Frontrunner Max Pigoli was out of luck in race two, his Ferlito Motors Jaguar ending up beached on top of Stefano Gabellini's BMW on the first lap after the pair clashed at the hairpin. Max Mugelli (CAAL Racing) was an innocent bystander in the crash, and was also an immediate retirement.

Audi's third driver Thomas Schoffler did not even make the start. Like in race one, the team had problem firing his RS5 up. Attempts to start the car at the end of pitlane proved fruitless, the rookie of the year contender forced to watch from the sidelines.
