Pons Racing has announced that Swiss driver Zoel Amberg will join the team for two seasons of Formula Renault 3.5 from 2012.
The 19-year-old sampled Pons machinery in testing at Motorland Aragon in November. Amberg ended his second day in the car inside the top-10 fastest times, and was just 0.4 seconds off pacesetter Will Stevens.
"I am sure this is the best choice I could do," said Amberg. "I liked very much the working method, the people and the atmosphere in the team when I tested with them in Aragon."
Amberg graduates to the category after a mixed campaign in GP3 this year. Results were more promising in European Formula 3 Open, where he achieved a victory at Barcelona and an additional three podiums. The Luzern-resident embarked on a single-seater career in 2009, and the following season became a race winner in Formula Abarth and clinched the Swiss FR2.0 championship.
Pons Racing's recently appointed team manager Emilio de Villota said: "Zoel represents a first step forward in the strategy to reach the mid- and long-term objectives of Pons Racing. I had the opportunity of working with Zoel in European F3 Open, and was immediately impressed by what he showed in terms of talent and potential. I am convinced that together we can do excellent work."
