Liuzzi takes pole on his A1GP debut

Force India test driver Vitantonio Liuzzi claimed Team Italy's first-ever A1GP pole position on his series debut at the impressive Algarve circuit

Liuzzi used his power boost to great effect to storm to the top of the times in sprint race qualifying, denying weekend pace-setter Robert Doornbos (Team Netherlands) his first A1 pole in the process. But the Dutchman fought back impressively to claim the top spot for the feature race.

Championship leader Team Switzerland endured a tough session. Driver Neel Jani failed to set a time in sprint race qualifying after a red flag caused him to run out of time in the opening segment, while a technical problem stopped the his car on track in the second. He will start the sprint from 20th and last.

But Jani recovered brilliantly, despite missing the first feature race segment, to charge into third on the grid for tomorrow's second race with his only flying lap.

Title challenger Team Ireland will line up third for the sprint and second in the feature with Adam Carroll, while Team Portugal's Filipe Albuquerque starts fifth and seventh at home.

Team Lebanon's Daniel Morad used his power boost in sprint race qualifying to take a great fourth, while Adrian Zaugg handed South Africa its best qualifying performance of the season with fourth in feature race qualifying.

Great Britain's Dan Clarke will start 13th in the sprint and 16th in the feature.
