Markus Pommer takes dominant first Formula 2 win at Spa
Markus Pommer dominated the opening race of the weekend at Spa, taking his first Formula 2 win in the process
Despite concerns on the grid about the wellbeing of his car, Pommer stormed away from the start to build an unassailable lead.
There was a scare on the first lap, when Mihai Marinescu forced Kevin Mirocha onto the grass coming out of Radillon. Mirocha subsequently lost control and spun back in front of the pack on the Kemmel straight, causing his rivals to take evasive action. Amid all the avoidance, Luciano Bacheta came off worst, ending up sliding into the barrier backwards and retiring.
Daniel McKenzie was able to build a gap in second place, leaving Marinescu and Matheo Tuscher to battle over the final podium position. After more forceful defending from Marinescu, Tuscher was finally able to get past thanks to a brave move up the inside into Les Combes with two wheels on the grass.
Christopher Zanella had a quiet race to fifth, ahead of debutant Vittorio Ghirelli. Dino Zamparelli was a comfortable seventh, after starting the race 11th, while Alex Fontana once again had to stage a storming recovery drive after dropping to the back of the field on the first lap, ending the race in eighth.
Hector Hurst came home ninth, and David Zhu grabbed the final points position from Parthiva Sureshwaren on the final lap of the race.
