Sachsenring MotoGP: Marc Marquez takes another German GP pole

After topping all of the practice sessions, Marquez went underneath his own pole record from 2014 early in Q2.

Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa briefly moved ahead but Marquez responded with a 1m20.336s, nearly three tenths quicker than Pedrosa, to seal a sixth consecutive pole at the Sachsenring across all classes.

Jorge Lorenzo will join his fellow Spaniards on the front row of the grid on his Yamaha.

Andrea Iannone was the best of the Ducatis in fourth after outpacing Pramac rider Yonny Hernandez late on.

Hernandez had to come through Q1, but went on to match his best ever qualifying result of fifth ahead of the championship leader and Assen winner Valentino Rossi.

Aleix Espargaro set the pace after the first laps on his Suzuki but ended up seventh and will start alongside the two Tech 3 Yamahas of his brother Pol and Bradley Smith.

Smith was delayed early in the session when he broke his screen, hitting it with his head during a big moment that briefly put him off track.

Cal Crutchlow was 10th on his LCR Honda ahead of Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso and Suzuki rider Maverick Vinales, who joined Hernandez in making it through from Q1.

Scott Redding had been in fine form on Friday but the Marc VDS Honda rider was bumped out of an automatic Q2 place in third practice and could not make amends in Q1, ending up with 14th on the grid behind Hector Barbera.
